NEW FEATURE: Geocaching ‘Souvenirs’

EDIT: 10-10-10 Groundspeak have got wise and the links provided below no longer yield information about the souvenir that will go at the link. We will just have to wait and see when they come! I trust you all have your 10-10-10 ones now, though? :)

I’m sure most of you will have noticed that the Geocaching.com site went down for a little while on the 5th October, but did you noticed the Souvenir feature that appeared during/slightly afterwards?

If you have a look at your public profile you will notice a new tab next to your Trackables tab, it is ‘Souvenirs’. If you click the link it will tell you that you don’t have any, however check out one of the Groundspeak Lackey’s Souvenir pages. Ooooh, a glipse of things to come! :)

WOW! Souvenirs!

It’s a bit of a mystery at the moment as to what souvenirs are, but I’m sure if we sit tight we will find out soon (Perhaps in the next update) and we can start earning them.

According to the About Souvenirs page:
“Souvenirs are virtual pieces of art that you can discover and display on your profile page. They are associated with a particular location and may also be bound by time.

There are two ways to discover a souvenir. The first is to log a geocache within the souvenir zone. For instance, if there were a souvenir for Hollywood, CA and you logged a geocache in Hollywood, you would be awarded the souvenir. The second is to search for a geocache using the Geocaching Application for iPhone or Android when you are within the souvenir zone. Text on your profile page will indicate whether the souvenir was discovered by logging or through an application.

If there is a time parameter to the souvenir, as there will be with those discovered at Mega-Events, the souvenir zone will expire at the end of the period. You can still obtain the souvenir by logging your attendance online.

If you have previously logged a cache in a souvenir zone, the souvenir will be added to your profile at a later date.”

So looks like us iPhone or Droid users have a bit of an advantage on this if we search in a location that a souvenir is in. There’s a fair bit of speculation as to what this is all about and Groundspeak haven’t confirmed anything, however I’m quite excited because it looks like us UK cachers will have some souvenirs coming. You can see the current souvenirs by visiting the following link: http://www.geocaching.com/souvenir/default.aspx?id= and adding a number after id= if you gradually increment this number you can see each one.

Know what gets me really excited? Numbers 74 through to 84 are Essex County Parks. Therefore I think there must be some link between Geocaching Projects (Like the Essex Parks one) and these new souvenirs. Notice that #81 says “Flitch Way County Park?” Flitch way isn’t a country park, it’s a long distance cycling path so I guess whoever the information got relayed to at Groundspeak just presumed that it was a country park. It is however an area where caches are laid by the Essex County Parks project. This is uber exciting as I’ve logged caches there so should get the souvenir when it comes out. It’s the little things that excite me!!!

Here’s a list of the links to the country park souvenirs. There are no cool icons yet, however knowing that there will be soon all adds to the excitment and mystery:

74 Thordon County Park
75 ?
76 Danbury County Park
77 Test email souvenir
78 Hadleigh Castle County Park
79 Great Notley County Park
80 Belhus Woods County Park
81 Flitch Way County Park?
82 Weald County Park
83 Cudmore Grove County Park
84 Marsh Farm County Park

So what do you guys think about this interesting looking new feature?

Happy Caching and Souvenir Collecting! :)

Currently in the process of proofing the ECP souvenirs….. and had already picked up on the error on the Flitch Way and Hadleigh CP (G/S will be changing the names prior to launch)…… very excited to be among the first few UK souvenirs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The postcards are looking amazing

That’s awesome :) I did well in making the link between the souvenirs and the Essex County park project then! :) I’m excited too. Probably because I know all of the parks are a good distance from us so we can collect them! Very pleased to see that it’s not just all USA! Can’t wait to see the ECP souvenirs!!!

I’m trying not to be cynical about this, but it seems like it is just to encourage people to download the official apps (which unlike c:geo for instance, aren’t free) because if you are looking with a GPSr you have to find the cache to claim the Souvenir, but if you have the app you simply have to be in the approximate area to claim the Souvenir, no actual find required!

    Happy caching, STP

Yeah that’s definitely what the blurb implies. Although I’m fine with that as I have the iPhone app I can understand that it is unfair to those who don’t have the app, and extremely unfair to those who don’t have smartphones, so they have to buy a specific type of phone just to be able to do this. However, they have said there will be a distinction between those who logged caches and those who searched using the app so that may even it out a bit. We shall wait and see… :)

      Happy Caching! Cass

Meh. Doesn’t seem to exciting to me… but that’s just my opinion ;-)

I didn’t see it though – so thanks for pointing it out. I did notice the Personal Notes on each cache page. I didn’t really see a point for those until I started thinking about mysteries and how helpful it would be to just keep your notes there ;-)

We are due about 6. They are going to award the souvenirs retrospectively apparently. Reading the original thread on G.com, I don’t think the smartphone app is required to get them.

Nice entry GeoCass! I just found a Geocache Souvenir when out and about yesterday.
I put my thoughts in blog form…including where the idea came from and what I think might be coming up next.
I think a fellow Englishman would value the “easy peasy lemon queezy” souvenir!
